But these offices also served a great purpose, because they pointed forward to the offices that Jesus himself would and continues to occupy. Jesus is our great prophet, priest, and king, and all three are critical to his greater work. Prophet by Paul Lytle As a prophet, Jesus spoke woes and blessings on the people from God. He spoke for God and commanded on his behalf. But there is something different in Jesus’ message in comparison to those who came before, because as the greatest prophet, he pointed to himself for salvation, while the prophets of old pointed to God. Priest by Paul Lytle As a priest, Jesus intercedes for us, sacrifices on our behalf, and even became our sacrifice for us. While the priests of old never stopped their sacrificial duties, Jesus’ perfect sacrifice was made once and for all time, and it is finished. King by Paul Lytle As a king, Jesus has rescued a people for himself, breaking their bonds to sin and bringing them into the Kingdom. It is this Kingdom he rules, and will rule for all time. He commands all that comes to pass, orders all things for his glory, and will judge the living and the dead on the last day.
