Description

by Paul Lytle

There is neither Jew nor Greek,
there is neither slave nor free man,
there is neither male nor female;
for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

-Galatians 3:28

     You ask me, if I would, describe my brother.
What can I say that you would understand?
Those words you use so oft to tell of another
cannot be used, my telling might be bland.

The words you wish to hear cannot sink in,
for they do tell of only shallow features;
they speak of naught but hair and shape and skin.
Is nothing more in made within these creatures?

     There's nothing of him in that which you can see,
and I have no desire for a further search
to tell of the Father's children here, for we
are one within the Body of the Church.

Of description, let nothing else suffice —
there is nothing but a leg or arm of Christ.
