I Knew Not Touch
by Paul Lytle
     What must I do what emotion should impart
to fill my withered soul, this life begin?
Such gross attention does demand a heart;
destroy it, Lord; I wish not feel again.
My nature gives no cause for me be haughty;
I've not device or scheme or strength imbued.
I cannot 'lone attend to this poor body;
destroy it, Lord, and make me up anew.
     I knew not touch until You numbed my nerves;
I knew not heights until You made me fall;
I knew not freedom 'til I bowed to serve;
I knew not love; I knew not love at all.
Naught else I hear, naught else I feel, not born:
I am not whole 'til I am rendered torn.
