Of the Rescuing of Maidens

by J. R. Barton

The maiden fairest sweetly slept
Ensconced within her bower,
While swift without Sir Roland leapt
To ground, and climbed her tower.

The maiden fairest sweetly slept,
Bright virtue’s chastest flower,
Which Roland thought was cruelly kept
Locked up by evil power.

"Depart, brash knight!" the maiden wept.
"On me no doom does lower!"
So thence away Sir Roland crept,
Subdued, ashamed and sour,
And the maiden fairest sweetly slept
Ensconced within her bower.
